One of my favorite elements of the biblical text are christophanies. A christophany is a visible manifestation or appearance of Christ before His human incarnation. Meaning, Jesus showing up in the older testament. Many believe that when the Angel of the Lord is manifested in the Bible, it is Jesus Himself. There is quite compelling evidence that this in fact true.
By viewing Jesus in the older testament, we can see some of His nature that is sometimes missed when only seeing Jesus in the New Testament.
The Hebrew word for Angel simply means Messenger. Yes, Jesus is God. But, part of His role in the Godhead is conveying the Message of the Father.
This Sunday, Pastor David will teach on the title and position of the Messenger of the Lord, and what is His complete message.
For Jacob wrestled with the Angel of the Lord at Peniel and declared with a LIMP: “I have seen God.”
Have you wrestled with God? Would you be willing, if you were to walk away with a limp?
“So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” The sun rose upon him as he passed Peniel, limping because of his hip. Therefore to this day the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip on the sinew of the thigh.” Genesis 32: 30-32
